Well-executed retail rituals reinforce customer bond

Retailers that invest time in thinking through and properly executing retail rituals, such as tea at the American Girl store or singing "Happy Birthday" to guests on their birthdays, are creating strong bonds with their customers, according to Illinois professor Cele Otnes. On the other hand, Otnes says, ill-conceived rituals can turn customers off and be perceived as mere marketing stunts.
