BBB's National Advertising Division has issued guidelines for marketers that want to use "like-gating" strategies to drive up their Facebook following. There's nothing wrong with the practice per se, but marketers need to be rigorously honest about the precise promotions to which Facebook users will be granted access, NAD executive Andrea Levine says. "The concept of corporate 'Likes' being broadly procured through offers of discounts and sweepstakes is becoming very, very common and very broad, but they need to be produced through truthful promotions," Levine says.
