As health care costs soar, small-business owners are getting creative about the benefits they offer, with some finding success with wellness programs, on-site care and other efforts. "What we're trying to do is think outside the box," said barbershop owner Amy Tanksley, who notes that "traditional group health-care plans don't work for us financially." In April, entrepreneurs raised about $575,000 through peer-to-peer loans on Prosper.com, a 19% increase from March. Meanwhile, at rival LendingClub.com, small-business loans are expected to rise 80% for all of 2011, proving that entrepreneurs are increasingly relying on peer-to-peer networks while bank credit remains tight.
