Random IRS audits to hit 2,000 small businesses annually

If you have never suffered through an IRS audit, your time may be coming: For the first time in 25 years, the IRS has scheduled an Employment Tax National Research Project to see how well small businesses are complying with the tax code. About 2,000 companies will be audited at random each year through 2012, paying special attention to areas such as worker classification, fringe benefits and payroll taxes, Rieva Lesonsky writes.
