Well-executed retail rituals reinforce customer bond

by Samia S. Morgan

Retailers that invest time in thinking through and properly executing retail rituals, such as tea at the American Girl store or singing "Happy Birthday" to guests on their birthdays, are creating strong bonds with their customers, according to Illinois professor Cele Otnes. On the other hand, Otnes says, ill-conceived rituals can turn customers off and be perceived as mere marketing stunts.

by Samia S. Morgan

Any small business owner knows how important it is to stay flexible, especially in an economic downturn, and yet many organizations are plagued with a surprising lack of elasticity. Make creativity an expectation, not an extra

by Samia S. Morgan

Business leaders need to make it clear that creative thinking is expected of all their workers, writes Edward de Bono. Set aside a quarter-hour at the end of every meeting to discuss new ideas, he advises, and hold people accountable if they have nothing to offer. "If new ideas are an expectation ... then people will make an effort to have new ideas," he says.

Remember you're the boss -- even when your employees are family

by Samia S. Morgan

Every business needs a clear boss and pecking order, writes George Cloutier. In this case study, a business owner gives his two sons equal vice president positions and cuts his own pay, which leads to a lack of authority and respect at the company. "You may be the owner, but nobody cares unless you act like the boss -- on every level," Cloutier writes, recommending the owner restore his pay and give his sons specific jobs.

BP spill-cleanup offers can be scams

by Samia S. Morgan

Job offers that promise a high wage for workers cleaning up the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico can be scams, the Better Business Bureau notes. BBB says applicants should be wary of companies that ask them to pay for training costs upfront or ask for their Social Security numbers or other personal information during the application process. "These are vulnerability pitches. They say you can make money and look at the good you'll be doing for the earth," said Zan Deery, a lead investigator with the Better Business Bureau's Eastern Washington, North Idaho and Montana division.

Late customers force owners to get creative with collections

by Samia S. Morgan

Faith Smith has been cracking down on late-paying customers at Eyes Cream Shades, which sells children's sunglasses to gift shops and other stores. She, like other small-business owners, has seen an increase in delinquent payments in the past year and a half. Smith instituted late-payment fees, began selling more products through distributors and now asks new customers to fill out a credit application. But her strategies carry some risks, experts say.
