Think before you go pink

by Samia S. Morgan

As pink appears on everything from football uniforms to bath soaps, BBB cautions consumers to watch out for potentially misleading donation information from companies and charities. Some firms may play on the hype and consumer empathy to boost profits while donating little or nothing to breast cancer causes. "If you can't verify the affiliation, don't expect your money to go to the cause," said BBB's Robert W.G. Andrew.

Why increasing prices could be better for business than cutting them

by Samia S. Morgan

More small businesses are cutting prices than increasing them as the economic slowdown continues, according to data from the National Federation of Independent Business. But experts say lowering prices may not be the best tactic even if it pulls in more customers. Increasing prices even slightly can have a bigger effect on profit than lowering them, according to a study in the McKinsey Quarterly.

How to Get a Discount on Your Homeowner’s Insurance

by Samia S. Morgan

Many factors have impacted the Property and Casualty Insurance market lately and homeowners are the ones taking the hit. It is not only getting harder to get comprehensive homeowner policies but it is also becoming increasingly expensive.

However, there are some steps that you can take today that can help you not only get a better rate or a policy discount, but will actually serve to better protect your home and your belongings from loss.

Whether you are a first time home buyer or you have owned your home for many years, you should definitely shop around and do your homework on the insurance companies who write homeowner’s policies in your area. Discounts will vary by company and by the city, state or region you live in. Here are some of our recommendations:

  • Home security system
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Sprinkler system
  • Dead-bolt locks
  • Handrails for both interior exterior steps and stairs

Additionally, your deductible plays a role in your premium rate – if you raise your deductible by $1000, you can save nearly 25% on your annual policy. Additionally, many companies offer discounts if you place both your home and auto coverage with them or if you own more than one property.

Additional ways to save:

  • Senior discounts
  • Association or employer discounts
  • Electronic payments
  • Non-smoker

Don’t forget to stay on top of your credit scores – it has an impact on all of your insurance rates. Also, be sure to evaluate your home’s value and the contents that are insured every year – if you make changes you may need to increase or decrease the replacement value, which will impact your premium. Above all, take an active role in your insurance protection. Make sure you keep up with safety features, shop rates and keep up with both your credit and your inventory – you’ll save year to year and in the long run.

If you have been happy with your current home insurance company, let us know! Also if you receive any discounts that we might not have listed, please share!

Collaborate to grow without capital

by Samia S. Morgan

When scarce capital makes it hard to grow, business owners should consider joint ventures as a cost-effective way to expand their market, Monica Mehta writes. Such collaborations can add exposure and expertise at very little cost, but be prepared to think ahead: "With partnerships, the value is built over time and it is important to agree how that value will be shared," says lawyer Robert Goldbaum.

Make working with family work for your business

by Samia S. Morgan

Friends and family can make great employees, but they can also demoralize your workforce and damage personal relationships, experts say. They advise employers to meet regularly with these employees to keep performance goals clear. "It's hard to do because we're not used to having those types of conversations with families and friends," said Andrew Keyt, executive director of the Loyola University Chicago Family Business Center.

SBA has money to lend this year, but 2011 looks uncertain

by Samia S. Morgan

Lending backed by the Small Business Administration was up for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, with nearly 55,000 small businesses landing loans guaranteed by the government. Those loans were doled out in fits and starts as federal funding became available. We're now in another "start" period, thanks to $505 million in guarantees provided under the Small Business Jobs Act, but the latest program expires in January.

Authenticity is the key to effective communication, Dave Clarke writes. That requires honesty, transparency, a willingness to help and a sense of your roots. Adobe Pumpkin Farm

2478 East Washington Blvd., Petaluma
Open daily through October 31st from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Adobe has tons of parking and over 30 acres of space.  The space
includes farm equipment to climb on, haunted houses (one for the
little kids), corn maze, animals, hay rides, pony rides, hay bale
mazes, jump houses, and reasonably priced merchandise.  We
like this place because it is on the OTHER side of the 101 from the
mega-patch (the Petaluma Pumpkin Patch) and has a more
relaxed vibe.

The G&M Farms Cornfield Maze & Pumpkin Patch

487 East Airway Blvd., Livermore
Open daily through October 31st
If you have never been to a cornfield maze, the G&M corn maze is unbelievable.
The maze is huge but manageable for the whole family.  For older kids, there are ten clue stations where you are asked questions in a number of categories of varying levels of difficulty.  The right answer puts on you on the path to the next clue.  The wrong answer leads you to a dead end.  Not far away is the pumpkin patch, farm animals, a cow train, a hay bale maze, and lots of other activities.  One of our favorites this year was the corn box.  That is, a box about 20 feet by 40 feet by 1 foot or so deep filled with about 9 tons of corn (there is another box nearby with about 7 tons of corn).  Sounds crazy but after a minute, you will be considering dumping the sandbox and replacing it with a couple of cubic yards of corn.  The only down side to this place  is that the pumpkin patch is a grassy lot with pumpkins laying in neat rows.:

Sinister Science Trick or Treat

Come in your costume and  receive a treat, drink some spooky punch and participate in hands-on sinister science activities. Enjoy guest appearances by special costumed friends. There will be Discovery Lab activities for tots with costumes, spooky read-alongs and much more. Fly a simulated space mission and experience some spooky space encounters in the Challenger Learning Center(1 pm and 3 pm) ; 11:00-4:00 pm Tickets $10 plus general admission, $5 plus general admission for members. For more info or reservations visit http://www.chabotspace.org

What are you doing for this Halloween? Be safe!
